Volleyball, Football Student-Athletes Awarded
PITTSBURGH – Layne Van Buskirk of volleyball and Darrin Hall of football were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Van Buskirk's accuracy in the middle helped lead No. 10 Pitt volleyball (25-1, 13-1 ACC) to a 2-0 road weekend at Georgia Tech (Nov. 2) and Clemson (Nov. 4). The Windsor, Ontario, native posted just one error on 40 attempts over seven sets played, accumulating a blistering attack percentage of .650. She recorded a season-best percentage of .824 with 14 kills and zero errors on 17 attempts in a sweep of Georgia Tech (Nov. 2). Her .824 clip is a team-best single-match percentage for the 2018 season. She followed up that performance with a .522 day at Clemson with 13 kills and one error.
Hall, a senior, rambled for 229 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries (12.1 avg.) and was not dropped for a loss the entire game in Pitt's (5-4, 4-1 ACC) Friday night victory at No. 23 Virginia. His touchdown runs covered 41, 2 and 75 yards, the last giving the Panthers a 20-13 advantage in the final quarter. For his performance in the 23-13 triumph that vaulted the Panthers into first place in the ACC's Coastal Division, Hall was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week and the ACC Running Back of the Week. Through nine games, Hall has rushed for 658 yards and seven touchdowns on 89 carries (7.4 avg.) for the season.
No. 10 Pitt volleyball continues to lead the ACC with a 13-1 record following a four-match road swing. Pitt returns to Fitzgerald Field House Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day against Duke.
Pitt football will close out its home slate with Senior Day at Heinz Field against Virginia Tech Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
