Basketball Student-Athletes Awarded
PITTSBURGH – Danielle Garven of women's basketball and Xavier Johnson of men's basketball were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Garven, a senior forward, had a standout weekend at the Challenge in Music City in Nashville, Tenn., leading the Panthers to a 2-1 record. At the conclusion of the Challenge, Garven was named to the All-Tournament Team after recording 44 points through three games. Pitt picked up wins over Arkansas (61-54) and Tennessee State (78-56), while falling to Wisconsin (57-42). Garven scored a season-best 17 points in the win over Tennessee State and put up 12 points against Arkansas. The senior ranks second on the team with 80 points scored this season and ranks second in points per game with 10.0.
Johnson scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line in a 75-73 win over Saint Louis. The Woodbridge, Va., native scored 17 points in the second half of play to help lead Pitt to a 6-0 start to the season. He added two rebounds, two assists and a steal versus the Billikens. Johnson has scored in double figures in all six games this season, matching Jerome Lane for the most double figures scoring games to open a freshman season at Pitt. Johnson has scored 20 or more points in each of the past two games, becoming the first Pitt freshman to post back-to-back 20+ point games since Charles Smith accomplished that feat during the 1984-85 season.
Up next, Pitt women's basketball will take on Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, set for 8 p.m. ET Thursday in Evanston, Ill. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus/BTN2Go.
Pitt men's basketball will face Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET in Iowa City, Iowa. ESPNU will televise the game.
