Volleyball, Football Student-Athletes Awarded
PITTSBURGH – Nika Markovic of volleyball and Kenny Pickett of football were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Markovic led No. 10 Pitt volleyball to a 2-0 pivotal road weekend in which the Panthers claimed the outright ACC Title, earning their second consecutive league championship. The junior right side recorded a team-high 4.11 kills per set, including a season-high 19 at Miami Sunday. Markovic added five digs, three blocks and three service aces against the Hurricanes. She hit .280 over nine sets played over the weekend, with a team-high 37 kills on 75 attempts.
Picket lifted Pitt football past host Wake Forest with a career performance in a 34-13 win, clinching the Panthers' first ACC Championship Game berth. He completed 23-of-30 passes for a career-high 316 yards and three touchdowns. Each of his TD passes came in the second half to help Pitt erase a 10-6 halftime deficit. Two of his scoring tosses came less than three minutes apart: a four-yarder to Rafael Araujo-Lopes and 63-yard strike to Taysir Mack that put Pitt up 20-10 at the end of the third period. After Wake Forest kicked a field goal to make it 20-13 early in the fourth, Pitt responded with an 11-play, 78-yard drive capped by Pickett's 23-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Ffrench, boosting the lead to 27-13 with 7:27 to play and essentially sealing the result.
No. 10 Pitt volleyball's (28-1, 16-1 ACC) regular season finale, dubbed "Party at The Pete," will be held Wednesday, Nov. 21, against Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. at Petersen Events Center. Fans may purchase tickets by calling the Panthers' Ticket Office at (800) 643-PITT (7488) or by ordering online at PittsburghPanthers.com. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available via the WatchESPN app.
Pitt football (7-4, 6-1 ACC) will close the regular season at Miami Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. kick on ESPN.
