Panthers Ranked for First Time Since 2004
PITTSBURGH—For the first time since the 2004-05 season, the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming & diving team entered the rankings this week of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) TYR Top 25—the most reputable poll in collegiate swimming & diving.
The Pitt men appear in this week's rankings for the first time in 14 years, listed at No. 25 with 23 points in the poll after voting from swimming & diving head coaches across the country. The last time Pitt swimming & diving received votes in the poll was during the 2010-11 campaign, when both programs garnered national votes.
While the Panthers remain focused on priming themselves to excel in upcoming meets, third-year Pitt swimming & diving head coach John Hargis is happy for his team but believes it's only the beginning for the program on the national scene.
"I'm happy for our student-athletes to be recognized nationally for their success," Hargis said. "But I can promise our fans and alumni that we're all working every day with the goal of becoming one of the best teams in the country. We're trying to build a program that rivals the best in the ACC and nationally. These athletes are striving for that. It's tremendous to earn this recognition, but everyone associated with our program wants more. This will only light a fire for our team and motivate us even more."
The Panthers (1-3, 0-3 ACC) earned a dominant win over George Washington at Trees Pool on Oct. 13, while all three of the team's defeats were in competitive dual meets away from home against top ACC programs also ranked in this week's CSCAA Top 25—Virginia (No. 16), Georgia Tech (No. 17) and Florida State (No. 21).
Pitt's performances through three meets this season have been so impressive that CollegeSwimming.com has the Panthers ranked No. 18 in its team dual meet men's rankings this week.
Leading the way for the Panthers, juniors Samy Helmbacher and Eben Vorster have been among the ACC's best in several individual events this season. Seniors Brian Lovasik and Aaron Sett, junior Luke Smutny and sophomores Blaise Vera and Bence Szucsik also rank among the conference's top swimmers in various events, while freshman Nick Garberina has been a breakout performer in diving.
The Panthers are off this weekend before returning to action for what will be an exciting ACC tri-meet on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 2-3) at Notre Dame against the No. 18-ranked Fighting Irish and Virginia Tech, who received votes in this week's CSCAA poll.
The ACC leads all swimming & diving conferences with seven men's teams in this week's CSCAA Top 25.
