Swimming, Diving Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Junior Valerie Daigneault of swimming and freshman diver Nick Garberina were named the University of Pittsburgh Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Daigneault continued her perfect start to the 2018-19 season, posting the top time in all of her races in leading the Panthers to a comprehensive 199-96 victory over George Washington on Saturday at Trees Pool. After winning all three of her individual races against Florida State and Georgia Tech last weekend, Daigneault repeated that feat in Pitt's home opener, cruising to victory with the top times by several seconds in the 200 free (1:49.27), 100 fly (55.82) and 400 IM (4:18.66, personal best). She also anchored Pitt's 200 medley relay with a split of 23.03, setting the tone for Pitt's dominant dual win.
Garberina cruised to victory on both boards in helping the Panthers defeat George Washington, 199-93, on Saturday at Trees Pool. In his first home meet, Garberina posted an incredible score of 354.38 on 3-meter to dominate the field with an NCAA Zone-qualifying score, while he also earned an event victory for the first time in his collegiate career on 1-meter with 293.25 points.
Pitt swimming and diving will compete next at Virginia, Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at 9 a.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
