Senior Wins Duquesne Duals, Freshman Scores Game-Winning Goal
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Kelly Hayes and Alexander Dexter were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Hayes, a senior, picked up the first individual win of her Pitt cross country career as she championed the Panthers' season opener, the Duquesne Duals, Saturday morning at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. She posted a personal best 5K time of 17:58.9 as one of five top-11 finishers for the Panthers. The Pearl River, N.Y., native led Pitt to its first season-opening team win since the 2014 SHU Griffin Classic.
Dexter helped Pitt men's soccer (2-2-0) post its second consecutive victory with a game-winning goal in the 30th minute against Loyola Monday night in Baltimore, Md. It was the first goal of the freshman's collegiate career, lifting the Panthers to a 1-0 shutout of the Greyhounds. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native was aggressive on the attack for Pitt as he led the way with three total shots.
The next meet for Pitt women's cross country is Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa.
Pitt men's soccer will open ACC play Saturday, Sept. 9, against North Carolina at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
