Panthers Earn First ACC Win in Program History
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team had a historic night at Ambrose Urbanic Field Friday. The Panthers earned their first ACC win since joining the conference in 2013 over No. 21 Syracuse, 2-1.
The win marks the first conference victory since 2011 when the Panthers defeated then-Big East foe Seton Hall, 2-0. It is also the first win over a ranked opponent since the 2008 season when Pitt upset then-ranked No. 20 Rutgers, 1-0.
Pitt improves to 5-5-0 overall on the year and is now 1-3-0 against ACC opponents. Syracuse drops to 5-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the ACC.
Coming off a 7-0 win over West Virginia Tuesday, the Panthers picked up right where they left off.
Freshmen Edward Kizza and Colin Brezniak were Pitt's goal-scorers for the night. Kizza's goal was his fourth on the season, while Brezniak's was his third.
The Panthers held a 12-9 shot advantage over the Orange, taking six in each half.
Redshirt sophomore Mikal Outcalt had another standout performance in goal, making six saves through the 90 minutes.
Kizza struck first in the 31st minute to give Pitt a 1-0 lead. Senior Pol Planellas played Kizza a long ball from the middle into the box. Kizza headed the ball past the Syracuse goalkeeper to score his third goal in two games.
Brezniak added the insurance goal in the 80th minute thanks to a great ball from sophomore Josh Coan. Coan fed Brezniak a ball up the left side. Brezniak crossed his defender outside the box and sent it into the upper right corner to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Syracuse found the back of the net late in the game as Johannes Pieles headed in the lone goal in the 88th minute.
The late goal by the Orange wouldn't be enough as the Panthers earned their first ACC win in program history.
Pitt returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Columbia in New York City at 7 p.m.
