PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head wrestling coach Keith Gavin announced the 2017-18 schedule Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers' slate features seven opponents that finished ranked in the top-25 USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll.
"Our schedule consists of several highly ranked teams from all over the country and we're excited to get things going," Gavin said. "It is important for us to test ourselves during the regular season to be sure that we are fully prepared for the national tournament at the end of the year."
This season seven, opponents come to Pittsburgh while the Panthers will face eight opponents on the road.
A small but mighty conference, Pitt faces the five ACC opponents in 2018, three at home and two on the road. The Panthers host Virginia Tech (Jan. 21), NC State (Feb. 2) and Virginia (Feb. 16). Pitt will take on North Carolina (Jan. 26) and Duke (Feb. 11) on the road. Of the five conferences foes, two finished ranked in the top 25 a year ago.
Prior to starting regular season competition, Pitt will hold its Blue-Gold Scrimmage (Nov. 4) in the Fitzgerald Field House. The time of the scrimmage is yet to be determined.
The Panthers are set to compete in two tournaments early on in the season at the Eastern Michigan Open (Nov. 11) and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite (Dec. 1-2).
Pitt's non-conference home slate features two teams that finished in the top 25 in No. 18 Oklahoma (Jan. 7) and No. 19 South Dakota State (Feb. 9). Clarion (Dec. 16) and North Dakota State (Jan. 5) will also make the trip to Pittsburgh this season.
The Panthers' will make stops at three opponents who also finished in the top 25. Pitt's first regular season dual will take place in Bakersfield, Calif., with a doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 17) followed by previously ranked No. 16 Wisconsin. The Panthers round out the weekend trip by making a stop at another ranked opponent in Arizona State (Nov. 19). Pitt will also make stops at West Virginia (Dec. 9), Bucknell (Dec. 17) and formerly ranked No. 11 Lehigh (Feb. 18).
Postseason begins March 3 for the Panthers at the ACC Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., hosted by the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The 2018 NCAA Championships will be held March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
PANTHERS IN THE PETE
Pitt versus Virginia will be the lone dual held in the Petersen Events Center this year. Fans with flex season tickets will have the option to sit in a reserved seating area similar to when Pitt wrestles in the Fitzgerald Field House. Flex season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased here. Single tickets for the Virginia dual can be purchased by clicking here. The last time Pitt wrestled in the Petersen Events Center in 2015, the Panthers drew 7,103 spectators when they hosted Penn State.
CATCH ALL THE ACTION
New this year, Pitt will be offering a flex season ticket package for $35. Each package will include a total of seven tickets, which can be used for any match. Tickets can be used traditionally (one ticket for each match) or in any combination (two tickets for three matches, seven tickets for one match, etc.).
Benefits for Flex Season Ticketholders include:
Gavin enters his first season as head coach of his alma mater. The 2008 national champion takes over a program that returns three NCAA qualifiers from a year ago in senior Dom Forys, Ryan Solomon and Taleb Rahmani. Gavin and his staff have also added standout transfers in Kellan Stout (Penn State) and Micky Phillippi (Virginia).
