PITTSBURGH – Looking to follow-up on program-best finishes in the 2016 ACC Championships and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, the University of Pittsburgh men's and women's cross country teams unveiled their 2017 schedule, coach Alonzo Webb announced Monday.
Five meets will be held in the state of Pennsylvania with two, including the Duquesne Duals (Sept. 2) and CMU Invitational (Oct. 7), nearby at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
"I'm looking forward with anticipation to both of our teams taking the next step towards our goal of being one of the best teams not only in the ACC, but in the Mid-Athletic region as well," Webb said. "Our athletes are understanding what it takes to compete in the largest and most competitive conferences and are looking forward to the challenges that it presents. The past two seasons our women's team has been on the verge of cracking into the top five elite teams that put you at least in the conversation of being at the National Championship meet. Our men's team should be very competitive as well, we return six of the top seven from last season and that experience should go far in maintaining our level of high expectation in the conference and beyond."
The men's squad will return all but one of Pitt's seven participants in the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional from last season, where the team made its best finish (11th) since placing a program-record sixth in 2006. Top returners for the squad include sophomore Nick Wolk, junior Matt McGoey and senior Aaron Lauer. Wolk and Lauer earned All-ACC Academic honors for cross country last year.
"I am extremely excited for the upcoming season and the schedule we have put together for our men," men's assistant coach Bryan Jackson said. "There is a lot of energy and excitement with the men's team right now. I look forward to the journey that is ahead of us."
On the women's side, five of the seven competitors from the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional will return, including All-Region honorees Gillian Schriever and Melanie Vlasic. The Panthers tied program records of seventh place in both the ACC Championships and Mid-Atlantic Regional in 2016. Schriever earned All-ACC honors and went on to become the first Pitt runner to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 12 years, since Maureen McCandless in 2004. Both Schriever and Vlasic landed on the All-ACC Academic Team for cross country.
"I am excited about our women's schedule this season," women's assistant coach Adam Bray said. "We have some great meets lined up, starting right here in Pittsburgh with our season opener. Our championship portion of the season includes a trip back to Notre Dame (where we raced four years ago) and a preview of the ACC course at the Pre-National meet at Louisville. Previewing the conference meet and later NCAA course will help our young women have success late in the season and at those particular meets."
The complete 2017 schedule is listed as follows:
Duquesne Duals – Saturday, Sept. 2 – Pittsburgh, Pa. (Schenley Park)
Harry Groves Spikes Shoe Invitational (women only) – Friday, Sept. 8 – University Park, Pa.
UB Stampede Invitational (men only) – Friday, Sept. 15 – Amherst, N.Y.
Waynesburg Invitational (women only) – Saturday, Sept. 16 – Waynesburg, Pa.
