Three-Time Pennsylvania State Champion Joins the Panthers
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head wrestling coach Keith Gavin announced the addition of three-time state champion Micky Phillippi to the Panthers' roster as a transfer from the University of Virginia.
"Micky is a great addition to our program," Gavin said. "He is another local guy coming back home and we couldn't be happier to have a student-athlete with his talent, work ethic and character joining our team."
Phillippi will sit the 2017-18 season due to intra-conference transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
A standout wrestler out of nearby Derry Area High School, Phillippi was a 133-pounder at Virginia where he went 22-7 as a freshman at open tournaments. He secured four wins by fall, three by tech fall and won five by a major decision.
"There's no place like home, so I'm really excited to join the Pitt wrestling family," Phillippi said. "The coaching staff are amazing people and I know that they will help me through the process of coming back. I can't wait to compete in the Field House because it will truly be a home match."
Phillippi was a three-time Pennsylvania State Champion and was also a placer at FloNationals and Super 32 prior to becoming a Cavalier. He was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country at 138 pounds by FloWrestling as a senior and was named the 2016 Westmoreland County Scholar Athlete of the Year alongside current Pitt women's basketball player Alayna Gribble, a 2016 graduate of Norwin High School.
Gavin enters his first season at the helm of a Pitt team that is returning three NCAA qualifiers from a year ago including ACC Champions Dom Forys, a rising senior at 133 pounds, and rising redshirt junior Taleb Rahmani at 157 pounds.
Flex season ticket packages are now on sale for the 2017-18 wrestling season. Tickets may be purchased online by clicking here or by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 1-800-643-7488.
