PITTSBURGH--Four University of Pittsburgh intercollegiate sports programs earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for exemplary Academic Progress Rates (APR): men's basketball, women's cross country, women's softball and women's tennis.
The awards are presented each year to teams finishing among the top 10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The four teams mark Pitt's highest number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards in a single year. The Panthers now have 19 teams recognized in the 12 years since the APR has been tracked.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
"We are extremely proud of our programs that were recognized by the NCAA for APR excellence," Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said. "We have incredibly driven student-athletes as well as highly supportive coaches and staff at the University of Pittsburgh, and I'm excited about seeing our number of recognized teams grow in the future."
