PITTSBURGH - Redshirt sophomore Cameron Johnson and junior Ryan Luther were each named to the All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team, as announced by conference commissioner John Swofford Wednesday morning. Both Panthers were also named to the all-academic team a year ago.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
The Skip Prosser Award, presented annually to the top scholar-athlete in ACC men's basketball, was awarded to Miami's Davon Reed. It is named in memory of Wake Forest head basketball coach George Edward "Skip" Prosser, who passed away on July 26, 2007. Prosser compiled a 291-146 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach, including a 126-68 mark in his six years with Wake Forest. Every Wake Forest senior he coached graduated, and the Deacons placed nine players on the annual All-ACC Academic Basketball Team during his tenure.
To be nominated for the Skip Prosser Award, a student-athlete must be an upperclassman with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better - both in his career and in the previous two semesters. Sixty percent of the award is based on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishments. Clemson guard Cliff Hammonds (2008), Miami guard Jack McClinton (2009), Virginia center Jerome Meyinsse (2010), North Carolina center Tyler Zeller (2011 and 2012), Duke center Mason Plumlee (2013), Pitt guard Cameron Wright (2014) and North Carolina's Marcus Paige (2015 and 2016) are past Skip Prosser Award recipients.
Johnson, also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, has enjoyed a breakout season averaging 11.9 points per game, while ranking among the ACC leaders in three-point field goals and three-point percentage. He has scored in double figures in 19 games, while posting the seventh-best scoring jump (+7.1 ppg.) in the ACC. Johnson has 73 three-point field goals on the year for the 10th-most in a season at Pitt.
Luther is averaging 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds, while shooting a team-high 55.6 percent (40-of-72) from the floor. He was sidelined for 12 games with a stress fracture in his foot before returning to action Feb. 28 at Georgia Tech. Pitt is 12-6 with Luther in the lineup this season. The Gibsonia, Pa., native set a school record with 15 consecutive made field goal from Dec. 10-21, including a 20-point game on 8-of-8 shooting from the field against Rice.
Pitt has now had 13 All-ACC Academic Team selection since joining the conference for the 2013-14 campaign. Johnson and Luther join Cameron Wright as two-time all-academic team selection. The Panthers have now had 63 conference academic team honorees (50 in the Big East; 13 in the ACC).
