PHILADELPHIA—Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced that former University of Pittsburgh running back James Conner will be honored with the Thomas Brookshier Spirit Award in recognition of his courage, leadership and outstanding effort.
Conner heroically overcame both a knee injury and Hodgkin lymphoma to return to the field in 2016. He was nothing short of spectacular in his final collegiate season, earning first team All-ACC after rushing for 1,092 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns.
Conner set ACC records for career rushing touchdowns (52) and total touchdowns (56). In Pitt annals, he emphatically established himself as one of the greatest backs in school history. Conner ranks second at Pitt in all-time rushing yards (3,733), total touchdowns and rushing TDs, trailing only the legendary Tony Dorsett in each of those categories.
The formal presentation of the Thomas Brookshier Spirit Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's 80th Anniversary Awards Gala on Friday, March 10, at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. For event and ticket information, click on the following link: MFC National Awards Gala
In addition to the Maxwell Football Club honor, Conner was previously named the recipient of the Disney Sports Spirit Award, the ACC's Brian Piccolo Award and the Capital One Orange Bowl-Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Courage Award. Pro Football Focus (PFF) named Conner its College Comeback Player of the Year.
"For as many people as James has inspired through his play on the field, that number pales in comparison to the countless others who were touched by his courage and strength in defeating cancer," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. "James' example has encouraged so many people to keep fighting through their own personal challenges. For as decorated a football player as he is, the hope and inspiration he has given others will be his greatest legacy."
