The Opening Tip
• Pitt (15-13, 4-11) hosts [8/8] North Carolina (24-5, 12-3) Saturday, Feb. 25 in the final regular season home game of the 2016-17 season. Game time is set for 12 p.m. with the ACC Network televising the contest.
• The Panthers are 2-5 on the year against teams ranked in the AP Poll with both wins coming at home against No. 11 Virginia (Jan. 4) and No. 17 Florida State (Feb. 18).
• Michael Young (20.4 ppg.) and Jamel Artis (19.3 ppg.) rank first and third, respectively, in the ACC in scoring. The duo has combined for 52 double-figure scoring games, including 26 games with 20 or more points scored.
Last Time Out
• Pitt went just 4-of-24 from the field in the second half of play en route to a 63-59 loss at Wake Forest Wednesday evening. The Panthers led by as many as 19 points in the opening half and only trailed for 47 seconds in the contest.
• Michael Young scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the foul line. He scored 17 points in the opening half of play but was saddled with foul trouble over the final 20 minutes of action.
• Jamel Artis also scored in double figures finishing with 11 points, while Cameron Johnson and Sheldon Jeter each added nine points and seven rebounds.
• Pitt did not make a field goal over the final 8:36 of game action. The Panthers were 0-of-9 from the field and 9-of-14 from the foul line during that closing stretch.
• The Panthers limited Wake Forest to 37.9 percent (22-of-58) shooting from the field, including just 3-of-15 from three-point range.
By the Numbers
• Pitt is 64th in the most recent RPI with a 6-12 record overall against teams listed in the top 100. The Panthers’ strength of schedule is currently ninth in the NCAA. North Carolina enters Saturday’s game ranked second in the RPI.
• Pitt is 14-4 all-time at the Petersen Events Center against teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll. The Panthers last home meeting against a top 10 opponent was a loss to No. 9 Virginia Feb. 6, 2016.
• The Panthers are 4-9 all-time against the No. 8 team in the AP Poll, including a 2-1 mark in such games at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt topped Notre Dame, 76-72, Jan. 31, 2015 in its last meeting against the eighth-ranked team in the AP Poll.
• Michael Young has scored 20 or more points in four of the past six games and is averaging 20.7 points per game over that stretch. His 15 games with 20 or more points scored is tied for the ninth-most in program history.
• Cameron Johnson is 23-of-45 (.511) from three-point range over the past seven games. He has two games with six three-point field goals (North Carolina and Syracuse) and one game (Virginia Tech) with five three-point field goals in that stretch.
• Michael Young (20.4 ppg.) and Jamel Artis (19.3 ppg.) form the fourth-leading scoring tandem in the NCAA at 39.7 points per game. The duo has delivered 51.4 percent (1090-of-2119) of the team’s scoring on the year.
• Sheldon Jeter is attempting to become just the second player in Pitt history to lead the team in rebounding, blocked shots and steals in a season. DeJuan Blair accomplished that task during the 2008-09 season.
• Seniors - Jamel Artis, Sheldon Jeter, Chris Jones and Michael Young - have accounted for 71.2 percent (1508-of-2119) of Pitt’s scoring on the year. Among major conference teams, only Iowa State’s senior class has accounted for a higher percentage of scoring on the year. Pitt is 9-2 on the year when three or more seniors reach double figures in scoring in a game.
• Michael Young is one of four players in the NCAA averaging over 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He is joined on the list by Randy Onwuasor (Southern Utah), Patrick Cole (NC Central) and Sindarius Thornwell (South Carolina).
• Michael Young and Jamel Artis rank first and third, respectively, in the ACC in scoring. The Pitt tandem is attempting to become the first pair of teammates to finish one and two in scoring in conference history. Duke’s Luke Kennard is currently 0.8 points per game ahead of Artis in the ACC scoring ranks.
• The Pitt threesome of Michael Young (20.4 ppg.), Jamel Artis (19.3 ppg.) and Cameron Johnson (12.0 ppg.) are tied for the third-leading scoring trio in the country at 51.7 points per game. The Panthers are 12-5 on the season when all three score in double figures in a game.
• Michael Young (20.4 ppg.) is attempting to become the first Pitt player to lead the conference in scoring since Clyde Vaughan averaged 22.0 points per game during the 1982-83 season to lead the Big East conference.
• Pitt is 14-4 on the year when shooting a higher percentage from the field than its opposition. The Panthers are 8-2 on the season when shooting over 50 percent from the field.
• Pitt’s 8.2 three-point field goals per game are the most in a season in program history. The Panthers’ 229 three-point field goals is tied for the second-most in program history. Cameron Johnson (69) and Jamel Artis (67) are just the second Pitt tandem to each make 60 or more threes in a season.
• The Panthers are 11-1 on the year when scoring 80 or more points in a game and 4-12 when failing to reach that mark. The lone loss when scoring 80 or more points was at No. 14 Louisville (85-80) Jan. 11.
• Pitt is one win shy of securing a non-losing season for the 17th consecutive season. The Panthers last sub .500 season came in Ben Howland’s first year at Pitt (1999-00). Pitt closed that campaign 13-15 overall.
