PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Brittany Knight and Taleb Rahmani were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Knight, a freshman pitcher, had an outstanding weekend in her debut for the Pitt softball team, earning three wins and a save as the Panthers went 5-0. Her opening appearance included a complete game shutout of UCF in which she threw a three-hitter and struck out four. Knight relieved junior starter Kayla Harris of her duties against No. 20 Kentucky on day two of the tournament, earning her first save of her career after facing eight batters. In her second start, Knight threw 5.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs in 23 batters faced. In an extra-innings win over UCF in Pitt’s final game, Knight relieved Harris once again, downing the Knights, allowing just one hit and a single run to seal the Panthers fifth win of the season.
Rahmani, a redshirt freshman, picked up two notable wins this weekend as he pinned Colston DiBlasi in 5:24 of Iowa State and took down No. 19 Andrew Atkinson of Virginia in sudden victory. Rahmani’s wins helped the 24th-ranked Pitt wrestling team improve to 10-5 on the season, while individually he leads the team with 19 wins and nine pins this season.
Up next, the Pitt softball team will play two games apiece against Nebraska and Northwestern, respectively, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Tallahassee, Fla., Feb. 17-19.
The No. 24 Pitt wrestling team will host Duke for Senior Day Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. The match will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available on the WatchESPN app.
