Sophomore Leads Volleyball to NCAA Second Round, Sophomore Distance Runner Posts Personal Record
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Nika Markovic and Nick Wolk were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Markovic, a sophomore, led Pitt volleyball (26-7, 18-2 ACC) to its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament Second Round Saturday in State College, Pa. Although the Panthers fell for the second straight year at the hands of No. 1-overall seed Penn State (3-1), Pitt ended the season with much to be proud of, including a share of its first ACC Championship. The Braslovce, Slovenia, native was a staple in the Panthers' offense in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, averaging a team-high 4.12 kills per set. She posted back-to-back matches with double-figure totals in kills (17, 16) and digs (13, 12). Markovic finished the year with 26 matches where she tallied double-digit kills, including the final 14 of the season, along with seven double-doubles.
Wolk, a sophomore, kicked off indoor track and field season at the BU Season Opener in Boston, Mass., Saturday, and came away with the best 5000m time – indoor or outdoor – by a Pitt Panther in the last 15 years. His personal best mark of 14:14.79 was good for fifth place overall, and third place for a collegiate athlete in the event. Wolk now owns Pitt's three fastest 5000m times over the last 15 years, including 14:16.12 at the Virginia Challenge (April 21) and 14:19.80 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 31) last season.
Pitt track and field will compete next at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala Friday and Saturday in Kent, Ohio.
