Planellas Become First MLS Combine Invitee in Program History
MLS Release
NEW YORK – University of Pittsburgh senior midfielder Pol Planellas is one of 60 NCAA Division I college players invited to participate at the 2018 MLS Adidas Player Combine in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 11-17, as announced Thursday.
Planellas is the first Pitt men's soccer player to be invited to the MLS Combine. He is one of 14 ACC players that received the invite.
Planellas came to Pittsburgh in the fall of 2017 bringing international experience to the pitch as a midfielder. A native of Barcelona, he made 12 starts for the Panthers, logging 1,077 minutes. An All-ACC Second Team selection, Planellas finished with six points after recording four assists and one goal.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to be invited to the MLS Players Combine," Planellas said. "It is my dream to play professionally and I wouldn't be in this position without the help of Coach Vidovich and the rest of the coaches at Pitt. I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead."
Planellas played a crucial role in the bright spots of the 2017 season that featured three wins over ranked opponents, two of which were over ACC opponents, a first in Pitt history.
The MLS Combine will be held at Orlando City Stadium, with representatives from all 23 MLS clubs scouting the top college prospects ahead of the Jan. 19 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia.
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA DI coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Further invitees, including Generation Adidas signings and non-college players, will be announced in the coming weeks.
