LAS VEGAS – Five Panthers are still alive in the consolation brackets at the conclusion of the first day of the 36th Annual Cliff Keen Invitational.
Senior Dom Forys (133), redshirt senior Nick Zanetta (141), redshirt sophomore Taleb Rahmani (157), redshirt freshman Gregg Harvey (184) and redshirt senior Ryan Solomon (285) are all still in the race to reach the podium Saturday, Dec. 2.
"We are competing hard, but we let a few matches slip away and that stings," said head coach Keith Gavin. "We need to stay focused on scoring the next point regardless of the circumstance. When we stay aggressive, good things are happening. I'm looking forward to seeing how our guys respond tomorrow."
Forys, Zantetta and Rahmani reached the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes but all suffered losses.
The No. 2 seed in the 133-pound bracket, Forys received a first round bye and cruised his way to the quarterfinals after collecting wins by technical fall and major decision. In the quarterfinals, Forys was stopped by the No. 7 seed Josh Terao of American in a 6-3 decision. The Pittsburgh native will take on Arizona State's Ali Naser in the consolation round of eight tomorrow.
Entering the tournament unseeded, Zanetta opened the weekend by upsetting the No. 4 seed Javier Gasca of Michigan State. Gasca, ranked 11th in the country, is Zanetta's first win over a ranked opponent this year. In the round of 32 and 16, Zanetta picked up back-to-back wins by decision to push him to the quarterfinals. He then faced the No. 5 seed Yianni Diakomilhails of Cornell and lost in a 9-1 major decision. Zanetta will look for revenge Saturday as he faces the No. 11 seed Russell Rohlfing of CSU-Bakersfield. The two previously met two weeks ago in Bakersfield, Calif, which resulted in Rohlfing defeated Zanetta 7-5 in sudden victory.
Rahmani entered the weekend as the No. 9 seed in the 157 pound bracket and rolled his way to the quarterfinals, winning his first three matches by decision. His most notable win of the day was over the No. 8 seed Andrew Crone of Wisconsin. Rahmani dropped a 3-1 decision to Crone two weeks ago in a dual meet in Bakersfield, Calif. The reigning ACC champion then faced the No. 1 seed Tyler Berger of Nebraska in the quarterfinals. Rahmani and Berger, ranked fourth in the country, were knotted 4-4 at the end of regulation. Rahmani, controlling the majority of the match, got taken down in sudden victory ending his run in the championship bracket. Rahmani will take on WVU's Zach Moore Saturday in the consolation round of eight.
Although suffering a first round loss, Harvey bounced back to survive another day in Vegas. He claimed three consolation matches to make his way to the consolation round of eight tomorrow. He will take on the No. 7 seed Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin.
Solomon entered #CKLV as the No. 4 seed in the heavyweight bracket and opened the day by picking up a 10-0 major decision over David Rupp of Embry-Riddle. He followed that by a 6-0 decision over Brandon Ngati of West Virginia. However, in the round of 16, Solomon's run in the championship bracket fell short as Purdue's Shawn Streck posted a 10-8 decision. Solomon had a statement win in his for wrestleback match, winning by technical fall in 3:42 (15-0). He finished the day by downing Cody Crawford of Oregon State in a 9-0 major decision. The three-time NCAA qualifier will take on the No. 6 seed Garrett Ryan of Columbia tomorrow in the consolation round of eight.
Redshirt freshman Jake Wentzel also had a notable day at 157 pounds as the 12 seed. After a first round by, Wentzel picked up an 8-0 major decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Nick Babcock in the round of 32. He then got bumped out of the championship bracket after falling short in sudden victory to the No. 5 seed Nick Wanzek of Minnesota, 9-7. Wentzel returned to the win column after a 4-2 victory over Christian Smith of California Baptist, but the No. 7 seed Branson Ashworth of Wyoming knocked Wentzel out of the tournament after a 3-1 decision.
Day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite gets underway at 12 p.m. EST at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Championship finals are set to begin at 6 p.m. EST.
