PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team visited the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC last Friday before embarking on a four-day trip to Brooklyn for the 2017 Progressive Legends Classic. Head coach Kevin Stallings and his team spent time; talking, playing games, signing autographs and singing, with patients in the hospital as well as their friends and families.
"It was an honor for our team to have the opportunity to visit the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh," said Stallings. "We were able to spend time with some truly courageous and inspiring families. I am proud of how engaging our guys were with the kids. We look forward to continuing to build our relationships with Children's."
Between games of jumbo Jenga, Connect 4 and Yeti in My Spaghetti, players also signed autographs, passed out mini basketballs, game tickets, shot baskets on a mini-hoop, while Stallings broke out his guitar for a sing-a-long and impromptu duet on a piano.
"It was a great opportunity to put things in perspective knowing certain things we worry about playing basketball aren't as important and also realizing the impact that we can make outside of the game," said freshman guard Marcus Carr. "Seeing the smiles on the kid's faces when we came to spend time with them was impactful. My favorite part was just the interaction, playing games and having fun. Coach was spinning the ball on some of the kid's fingers, which was cool because none of them thought they could do it. I know that made them feel good because we hyped them up and gave them a big round of applause."
Renowned for its outstanding clinical services, research programs and medical education, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has helped establish the standards of excellence in pediatric care. From Ambulatory Care to Transplantation and Cardiac Care, talented and committed pediatric experts care for infants, children and adolescents who make more than 1,000,000 visits to Children's, its many neighborhood locations, and Children's Community Pediatrics practices each year.
Children's Hospital has been in its new 10-acre home in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood since May 2009. Designed with input from physicians, nurses and families to ensure that patients receive care in a comfortable setting, the hospital is a benchmark for quality care built on five principles including: family-centered care, patient-safety and quality, technological sophistication, green campus and quiet building.
