Schriever, Hughes Represent Panthers’ Historic Performance at Regionals
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Gillian Schriever and Ryan Hughes represented the Panthers' cross country program by being named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
The women's cross country team made history Friday by placing fifth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet hosted by Lehigh University. It was the Panthers' all-time best team finish at the event, surpassing their previous mark of seventh, reached in 2016, 2015 and 2001. Schriever, a junior, was Pitt's top finisher, placing 16th at 20:31.4 in the 6K to collect All-Region honors for the second time in her career. Teammate Miranda Salvo also picked up All-Region honors – the first of her career – by placing 24th at 20:44.8.
The men's cross country team also produced historic results, posting their best team finish at the regional meet in 11 years by placing 10th. Hughes, a junior, took 11th place in the 10K at 30:45.4 to earn the first All-Region honors of his career. Senior Aaron Lauer joined him with All-Region honors by taking 22nd place at 30:53.8.
With the regional meet marking the end of cross country season, the Panthers will kick off indoor track and field season with the annual Blue-Gold Meet, set for Dec. 1-2 at Charles L. Cost Sport Center and Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh.
