Four Student-Athletes Earn All-Region Honors
RESULTS
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Pitt men's and women's cross country teams produced historic results Friday morning at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet, hosted by Lehigh University at the Goodman Campus Course.
The women placed fifth in a field of 28, marking the Panthers' best team finish at the Regional in school history. The placement surpassed their previous mark of seventh, reached in 2016, 2015 and 2001.
"First and foremost our women ran with tremendous heart today," women's cross country coach Adam Bray said. "We have had an interesting fall and have gotten better as the season has gone on. Even though it looks like we might come up a little short of being represented at NCAAs in a week, to finish in the top five in our region is a great accomplishment. It is the best finish in program history and I can't put into words how proud I am of these young women. They've been through a lot this fall but they never stopped believing in each other. We are looking forward to getting on the track next."
The men made their best team finish in 11 years, placing 10th in a field of 26. It was the Panthers' top finish at the Regional since a school-record placement of sixth in 2006.
"I'm very proud of how Ryan [Hughes] and Aaron [Lauer] raced today," men's cross country coach Bryan Jackson said. "Being named to the All-Region team is a great accomplishment. I'm also proud of the team as a whole. We entered the meet ranked 13th in the region and we were able to beat that by three spots."
Four Panthers claimed All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors at the meet by placing in the top 25 in their respective races.
On the women's side, Junior Gillian Schriever claimed the accolades for the second time in her career and for her second consecutive season, placing 16th at 20:31.4 in the 6K race. Just behind her was classmate Miranda Salvo in 24th (20:44.8), who earned the honors for the first time in her career.
For the men, junior Ryan Hughes placed 11th in the 10K at 30:45.4, and senior Aaron Lauer took 22nd at 30:53.8. The All-Region honors were the first for each student-athlete.
