Sophomore Helps Panthers Extend Win Streak, Senior Posts Productive Weekend
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Stephanie Williams and Pol Planellas were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Williams, a redshirt sophomore, led Pitt volleyball (11-4, 4-0) with 11 kills in the Panthers' 3-0 sweep of Virginia Tech Sunday, as the team extended its win streak to eight matches. In the previous match against Virginia, she had 15 kills and hit .433 in the sweep of the Cavaliers. In total, she averaged 4.33 kills and 2.83 digs per set while hitting .345 on the weekend. Over the Panthers' eight-match streak, Pitt has dropped just two sets.
Planellas, a senior on the men's soccer team (5-5-0, 1-3-0), played a major role in the Panthers' 7-0 domination of West Virginia (Sept. 26). The midfielder found the net for the first time this season in the 36th minute against the Mountaineers to put the Panthers into a 2-0 lead. Pitt's win over WVU marked its larges win margin since a 9-0 victory over Howard in 2013. In the next match against No. 21 Syracuse, Planellas assisted freshman Edward Kizza on the first goal of the night, helping propel Pitt to its first ACC win in program history. It was the Panthers' first conference win since 2011 and its first win over a ranked opponent since 2008.
The volleyball team will look to extend its eight-match win streak when it visits Florida State (8-4, 2-2) Friday and Miami (9-1, 3-1) Sunday. Both matches will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, with links available on the schedule page at PittsburghPanthers.com. The Panthers' match against the Hurricanes will also be available to watch on television via RSN/AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh.
Pitt men's soccer will face its second consecutive top 25 opponent in Columbia (5-0-2, 1-0-0) Tuesday in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. The match will be streamed live in the Ivy League Network.
