Senior Swimmer, Junior Running Back Honored
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Amanda Richey and Darrin Hall were named First National Bank Student-Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Richey, a senior swimmer, dominated her preferred freestyle distance events over the weekend, besting the top swimmers from No. 13 Virginia and LSU in an exciting tri-meet. The Boulder, Colo., native captured the top spot in both the 1,000 free and 500 free, scoring maximum points for the Panthers in both events. Her times of 9:57.00 and 4:52.68 marked significant improvements over Pitt's opening meet at Georgia Tech two weeks ago as the All-America candidate continues to post times well above her pace last season that saw her finish as an ACC finalist and NCAA qualifier. Richey also took fourth in the 400 IM against the Cavaliers and Tigers, scoring more team points that helped Pitt top LSU as a team for an impressive dual meet victory over the Tigers of the SEC.
Hall, a junior running back, broke a century-old school record while slicing through the nation's No. 16 rushing defense for a career-high 254 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-17 win at Duke Saturday. He averaged an impressive 10.6 yards on 24 carries. Facing a Blue Devils defense that was surrendering a mere 108 yards on the ground, Hall ripped off touchdown sprints of 79 and 92 yards. The latter score marked the longest touchdown run in Pitt history, eclipsing the 100-year-old record of 91 established in 1917 by George McLaren. Hall broke the record almost 100 years to the day it was originally set. McLaren, who played under legendary Pitt coach Pop Warner, established the mark against Syracuse on Oct. 20, 1917. Hall's third TD, a four-yard score with 10:48 left, gave Pitt the lead for good at 21-17. His performance helped Pitt produce a season-high 336 rushing yards, more than triple what Duke had been yielding heading into the contest. Hall was named the ACC's Offensive Back of the Week for his efforts.
Pitt swimming and diving returns to action Friday, taking on Miami, Michigan State and James Madison in the Pink Meet at 4 p.m. in Trees Pool.
Pitt football (3-5, 1-3 ACC) will play host to Coastal Division foe Virginia (5-2, 2-1) Saturday at Heinz Field. The game will kick off at 12:30 p.m., and will be televised in Pittsburgh by AT&T SportsNet. For tickets, click here or call (800) 643-PITT (7488).
