UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to Sponsor Exhibition Game
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team will host Division II Slippery Rock in a Shoot Down Cancer Exhibition Game presented by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Petersen Events Center. Game time is set for 2 p.m. with all students invited to participate in an on-court event immediately following the contest.
Head coach Kevin Stallings and the Oakland Zoo will spearhead the fundraising efforts to raise money in the fight against cancer by donating $1 for every fan in attendance. The University of Pittsburgh athletic department will also contribute $5 per single-game ticket purchased . All proceeds from the event will go to local pediatric cancer research. Tickets for the game can be purchase by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488 or by clicking HERE.
"We are honored to host this event and to help in the fight against cancer," said Stallings. "This will be a great partnership between Pitt Athletics, our program, the Oakland Zoo and the American Cancer Society. Our hope is to not only raise a lot of money, but to raise awareness and engage our community. We are fortunate to have a platform through basketball to do this and we want to take full advantage of our opportunity to help those in need."
Members of the Oakland Zoo will have an additional opportunity to join in the fight following the game by coming to the court to "Shoot Down Cancer". Each member of the Oakland Zoo in attendance will have the opportunity to make a free throw, three-point shot and half-court shot to help raise funds at the event. Monetary donations for each shot made will be determined at a later date.
The postgame event will also feature pizza for students as well as the opportunity to interact with current players and coaches on the Petersen Events Center floor.
"This is a terrific collaboration pulled together by Coach Stallings and our men's basketball team," said Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "We have a unique opportunity to impact people beyond what we do on the court and it is great to see our student-athletes and staff positively impacting others. This event is a tremendous opportunity for our team and Panther fans to make a difference in our community."
"Shoot Down Cancer" began at the University of Wisconsin under head coach Bo Ryan in 2012. Over a four-year span, the event in Madison helped raise $220,911 with the American Cancer Society helping to secure an additional $1,068,134 in matching donations.
Stallings enters his second year in charge of the program with a young but talented roster. Seniors Ryan Luther and Jonathan Milligan, the lone returning letterwinners with significant game experience, are joined by a deep incoming class of graduate transfer Monty Boykins, JUCO standout Jared Wilson-Frame, Rivals Top 100 point guard Marcus Carr, versatile big man Terrell Brown and talented spring signees Parker Stewart, Shamiel Stevenson, Khameron Davis, Peace Ilegomah, Samson George and Kene Chukwuka. The Panthers also added Malik Ellison, a skilled wing who began his college career at St. John's. Ellison will sit next season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The Panthers 18-game home schedule at the Petersen Events Center features nine games against postseason team from a year ago, including seven contests against NCAA Tournament qualifiers. Pitt will also host four teams – No. 5 Duke, No. 9 West Virginia, No. 10 Louisville and No. 12 Miami – listed in the ESPN Way-Too-Early Top 25.
