PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes James Conner and Stephanie Williams earned the initial 2016-17 First National Bank Athletes of the Week honors, announced Tuesday.
Conner, a redshirt junior running back, made his official return to the gridiron Saturday against Villanova after overcoming a season-ending knee injury followed by a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma last fall. The Erie, Pa., native scored the opening two touchdowns of the Panthers’ 28-7 victory -- the first rushing and the second receiving -- and led the team with 53 yards on 17 carries. The win over the Wildcats marked the 12th multi-score game of his career.
Williams led the attack for Pitt volleyball at the USCB Thunderdome Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif., this weekend. With the redshirt freshman outside hitter in the lineup, the Panthers went 3-0 at the tournament, including a win over No. 25 Colorado State in the opening match. That win also marked the Panthers’ 1,000th program victory. Williams collected 14 kills and seven digs against the ranked Rams, and finished the weekend with 34 total kills (3.40/set) and a dominant .312 hitting percentage. The Eastlake, Ohio, native also added 22 digs and four blocks in the tournament.
Pitt football’s highly anticipated meeting with Penn State will be nationally televised by ESPN with a noon ET kickoff Saturday at Heinz Field.
The Pitt volleyball team will return home to Fitzgerald Field House to host the Panther Invitational Friday and Saturday. Participating teams include American, Coastal Carolina and No. 22 Michigan. The Panthers’ matches against American and No. 22 Michigan will be televised by ACC Network Extra Saturday at noon ET and 7 p.m. ET, respectively.
