PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Nika Markovic and Matt Venanzi were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
As the Pitt volleyball team opened conference play, Markovic was one of the Panthers’ top contributors en route to wins over Georgia Tech and Clemson this weekend. The freshman right-side hitter had a huge defensive game Friday against the Yellow Jackets, posting 14 digs and three blocks, while also providing two service aces. Markovic finished the match with eight kills. Against the Tigers Sunday, she hit .571 after registering nine kills on 14 total attempts with just a single error. Markovic also added eight digs and another ace. She currently leads the team in serving with 19 aces.
Venanzi, a senior midfielder, helped Pitt men’s soccer defeat Longwood with a game-winning goal in the 59th minute Monday night. The Pittsburgh native collected a free kick from freshman Josh Coan and sent the ball through traffic in the box, placing it in the bottom right corner of the net. It was his second score of the season, giving him four points for second place on the squad.
Pitt volleyball (11-3, 2-0 ACC) will make its first ACC road trip of the season when it visits Virginia Tech Wednesday night in Blacksburg, Va. The match will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra at 7 p.m. ET.
Pitt men’s soccer (2-5-2, 0-2-1 ACC) will host Junior Panthers Night for their match against Notre Dame Friday at 7 p.m. ET at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Fans can enter to win a Pitt soccer scarf and student-athletes will be available for postgame autographs. The game will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra.
