FARMVILLE, Va. - Two second half goals sent the Pitt men's soccer team (2-5-2) to a 2-1 victory over Longwood (3-5-1) Monday night in non-conference action.
Pitt attempted 10 shots, while the Lancers took 21 with just five on target. Longwood also had a 5-2 advantage in corners through the 90 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, the Panthers got on the board in the 52nd minute after freshman John Fritz went one-on-one with the Lancers' goalkeeper and found the back of the net from seven yards out. Fritz's goal was the first of his career.
Pitt struck again in the 59th minute off a free kick. Freshman Josh Coan connected with senior Matt Venanzi in the middle of the field. Venanzi sent the ball through traffic in the box and placed it in the bottom right corner.
Longwood responded in the 77th minute as Finnlay Wyatt worked his way through a crowded box and sent a shot past redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt in the lower right corner.
Outcalt made four saves on the night, totaling 44 this season.
The Panthers return to Pittsburgh and ACC action Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. to take on No. 3 Notre Dame at Ambrose Urbanic Field in the Petersen Sports Complex.
