PITTSBURGH-- The Pitt men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Loyola Tuesday night at the Petersen Sports Complex, after surrendering a pair of late set piece goals.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-5-1 overall and the Greyhounds improve to 2-5-0 this season.
Pitt struck first, tallying a goal in the 25th minute. Junior forward Roosevelt Angulo dribbled across the outside of the box and found sophomore midfielder Alec Anselmo just outside the middle of the 18. Anselmo corralled the pass and blasted it past the sprawling Loyola senior goalkeeper Matt Sanchez.
Loyola upped the pressure in the second half due to a strong counter attack. They were able to earn seven corner kicks in the second half, a good share of their 10 in total.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mikal Outcalt was up to the task for much of the game. However, in the 88th minute Loyola finally solved him. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box and freshman midfielder Barry Shirefi curved his shot inside the left post to tie the game.
In the 93rd minute, Loyola was awarded a free kick again, straight on from 29 yards out. Once again, Shirefi struck it well and Outcalt wasn't able to get enough of the shot to turn it aside.
"Before this season, he's never seen a match, so there's a bit of a lack of experience there," head coach Jay Vidovich said. "Bottom line is he made some big plays for us, but he was also exploited on his mistakes. There were mistakes before that [on the free kick]."
Outcalt had eight saves in the loss, tying a season-high.
Pitt finished the game with seven shots, three of them on goal. They also secured four corner kicks.
The Panthers resume conference play Friday, Sept. 23, as they travel to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke. The Friday night conference clash will be featured on ACC Network Extra with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
