PITTSBURGH - The men's 4x400 meter relay team is coming off its fastest time of the season and a first place finish at the Virginia Challenge with a time of 3:06.97.
One of the favorites to win the ACC title, the Panthers, along with North Carolina and Clemson, have posted the league's three fastest relay times, and are all separated by less than a second.
Individually, Chris Tate ranks fifth in the ACC in the 400 meter dash, while Desmond Palmer is sixth and Donnell Taylor eighth. Palmer also has the league's second fastest 400 meter hurdle time and third fastest 110 meter hurdle time.
For the Panthers, getting their times to the top of the conference has not gone without the pain and sacrifice that goes into their grueling midweek workouts.
Deemed "Black Tuesday," it is Pitt's hardest workout of the week and it prepares the Panthers for what lies ahead for the upcoming meet.
"I don't think there's any race that will be as tough as these workouts, and they know that," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "I want the meets to be easy for them. It shouldn't be anything stressful. They have been through the fire and that is how this program has been successful. We get after it on Tuesdays."
Pitt is inching closer to the ACC Outdoor Championship Meet which is set for May 12-14 in Tallahassee, Fla. The Panthers though, will first be in action this weekend and the prestigious Penn Relays, and then the Kehoe Twilight meet hosted by Maryland on May 6.
