GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Running in the finals of the 4x400 meter relay, the Pitt men's team placed third overall to conclude the Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium.
After running a time of 3:10.55 yesterday to qualify for the finals, the team of Donnell Taylor, Chris Tate, Brylan Slay and Desmond Palmer improved that time by three seconds in the finals and ran a season-best 3:07.67 to take third.
Florida won the race in 3:06.04, while St. Augustine's was second and just edged out the Panthers in a time of 3:07.22. Pitt finished ahead of Morgan State, NC State, Florida A&M and Iowa in the finals.
"Today was the race this group is capable of running," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "This weekend I saw flashes of what they can do. We have some things we need to clean up but I only expect them to run faster as the season goes on. This group is capable of breaking the school record. As good as our team was back in 2014, this group can be just as good, if not better."
Slay, Taylor and Palmer also teamed up with Joshua McDonald in the 4x200 meter relay and placed 19th overall in a time of 1:27.33.
In other relay events, the women's sprints team had their best showing in the 4x200 meter relay as Morgan Harvey, Alyssa Wise, Khadeja Kearney and Whitney Martin posted a time of 1:38.86 to finish 17th out of 34.
