Stachel, Calegan Shine in Day Three of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - An impressive showing in the 100 breast, as well as a new season best in the 400 medley relay, capped off the third day of the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships from the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., Friday night.
The Panthers posted a strong showing in the 100 breast, as three swimmers competed in the C final. Pitt earned the top two times in the heat, led by a first-place finish from Nick Stachel with a time of 54.37. Haden Calegan followed in second with a time of 54.42, while Gabe Larson earned eighth with a time of 55.63. Statchel's time marked the fastest by any Pitt swimmer on the season and both he and Calegan earned NCAA B cut times.
The 400 medley relay team of Mack Rice, Statchel, David Sweeney Jr. and Brian Lovasik earned second in heat one and 9th overall with a season-best time of 3:14.60.
Zach Lierley started off the evening with some excitement as the junior posted a third-place showing in the B final of the 400 IM, touching with a time of 3:47.50. Earning a time of 1:37.40, an NCAA B cut mark, Lovasik placed third in the C final of the 200 free.
Also competing in day three's preliminary action, Rice earned 34th in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.70, Sweeney posted a time of 48.49 to take 30th in the 100 fly and was joined by teammate Mike Pichette in 33rd with a time of 48.74. Spencer Gray (1:38.58), Andrew McCarthy (1:40.19), Aaron Sett (1:40.49), Jake Tovey (1:41.45) and Scott Simmer (1:42.01) took part in the 200 free, while Alex Cook earned a time of 56.45 in the 100 breast. Matthew Tankle (49.38), Brendan Barry (52.06) and Pichette (52.10) each swam in the 100 back.
Through three days of competition, the Panthers sit in 10th place with 258.0 total points. Scores from the men's platform diving competition, which was held in conjunction with the women's championship, have yet to be added. Dominic Giordano earned fourth place on the board.
The Panthers will close out the 2016 conference meet on Saturday, with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free and 400 free relay to conclude the action in Greensboro.
