Panthers to Compete at Golden Flashes Gala

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt track and field team will travel to Kent State for its first competitive meet of the 2016-17 indoor season, the Golden Flashes Gala, at Kent State Field House Friday and Saturday.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The meet will kick off Friday with field events, including men's and women's weight throw (12:30 p.m.), women's pole vault (1 p.m.) and women's long jump (2:45 p.m.). The women's 5000m race is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the men's 5000m.
The men's heptathlon, including the 60m dash, long jump, shot put and high jump, is set for 1:15 p.m. The women's pentathlon, including the 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m race, will be at 1:45 p.m.
The majority of the running events will happen Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Field events on Saturday include the men's and women's high jump (11 a.m.), shot put (11 a.m.), long jump (11:30 a.m.) and men's pole vault (1:30 p.m.). The men's heptathlon of 60m high hurdles, pole vault and 1000m is set for 11 a.m.
MEET THE PANTHERS
Key newcomers competing at the meet include Quadaisha Newkirk (sprints) and Jamaree Murray (sprints). Newkirk, a junior from Philadelphia, Pa, is the reigning NJCAA national champion in the 400m. Murray, also a junior, hails from Raleigh, N.C., and placed fourth in the 4x400m at the 2015 NJCAA Outdoor National Championships.
On the men's side, the Panthers return 2015-16 All-ACC performers in Ashad Johnson-Conley (sprints/hurdles), Joshua McDonald (sprints), Desmond Palmer (hurdles) and Brylan Slay (sprints). Palmer represented Pitt at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, earning All-America second team honors.
The women return 2015-16 All-ACC honorees in Kelly Hayes (distance), Laila Ismail (hurdles) and Gillian Schriever (distance). Schriever recently closed out cross country season by becoming the first Pitt runner to compete at the National Championship meet since 2004. She earned All-ACC and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.
