Newkirk, Young Garner First National Bank Weekly Accolades

PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Quadaisha Newkirk and Michael Young were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
At her first meet as a Panther, Newkirk won the women’s 500m race at the Golden Flashes Gala Saturday with a time of 1:12.63. As of Saturday evening, her time stood as the second-fastest in the nation. The Philadelphia native also contributed to a relay win as the anchor for the Panthers in the 4x400m, alongside Laila Ismail, Desiree Garland and Morgan Harvey with a time of 3:48.08. Pitt claimed wins in four other events at its first indoor meet of the season, including the 1,000m race (Erin O’Connell, 3:03.47), mile (Joslin Sellers, 4:57.32), 3,000m race (Sarah Kochinsky, 10:20.08) and triple jump (Taylor Middleton, 12.08m).
Young led Pitt men’s basketball (8-2, 0-0 ACC) to wins over Buffalo (Dec. 7) and Penn State (Dec. 10). The Duquesne native averaged 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while going 14-of-27 (.519) from the field and 15-of-20 (.750) from the free throw line. He opened the week with 17 points and seven rebounds in just 23 minutes of against in the win over the Bulls. He posted his seventh game this season of 20 points or more in the 81-73 win against Penn State in the Never Forget Tribute Classic, finishing with 29 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field and 11-of-14 from the foul line. He knocked down a pair of three-point field goals and also had nine rebounds in the win over the Nittany Lions.
The Panthers’ next track and field meet is the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., Saturday, Jan. 14.
