PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Kauai Bradley and Nathan Peterman were named First National Bank Athletes of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Bradley, a sophomore forward, helped the Pitt women’s basketball team open the 2016-17 season with a 2-0 record, as the Panthers defeated Mount St. Mary’s (89-54) and Youngstown State (63-50), Saturday and Monday, respectively. The Chicago, Ill., native led the Panthers with a scoring average of 14.5 points over the two contests, and added 8.0 rebounds while shooting a blistering 58.8 percent from the field (10-of-17). She shot 57.1 percent from long range (4-of-7) and went 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line. She posted career highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds in her first career double-double against the Mountaineers (Nov. 12) and followed that performance with 13 points, six rebounds and career-high totals of four blocks and four steals against the Penguins (Nov. 14).
Peterman, Pitt’s senior quarterback, was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week for the Panthers’ thrilling 43-42 upset of No. 2 Clemson Saturday. The Jacksonville, Fla., native set career highs in passing yards (308) and passing touchdowns (5) against the Tigers’ highly touted defense. In one of the greatest games ever played by a Pitt quarterback, Peterman tossed five touchdown passes against a Clemson team that had previously allowed only five touchdown passes all season entering the game. The Pitt senior tallied 242 yards passing and four scores in the first half alone. He became the first FBS player to pass for five TDs with no interceptions against a top-three ranked opponent since USC’s Matt Leinart in the BCS National Championship Game versus Oklahoma at the end of the 2004 season. Peterman also picked up Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Pitt women’s basketball (2-0) will continue its nine-game home stand by hosting Loyola Chicago (0-1) at Petersen Events Center Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available via the WatchESPN app.
The bowl-eligible Panthers football team (6-4, 3-3 ACC) will return home to host Duke (4-6, 1-5 ACC) in a Coastal Division clash on Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field. The game will be broadcast on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh with a 3 p.m. ET kickoff.
