PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh track and field team will open its 2016-17 season with the Blue-Gold Meet, set for Dec. 2-3 in Pittsburgh.
"This is a year of expectations," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "After concluding our cross country seasons and seeing the development and progress that was made, we expect to have a carryover effect to the indoor and outdoor seasons with the entire track and field team."
The Blue-Gold Meet will be held at Cost Center Friday, Dec. 2, and will move to Fitzgerald Field House Saturday, Dec. 3. Following the intrasquad event, the Panthers will compete one final time in 2016 when they travel to Kent, Ohio, for the KSU Golden Flashes Gala Dec. 9-10 at Kent State Field House.
"Based on how the six-week conditioning phase has gone there is great optimism for our program," Webb said. "The blue-collar work ethic that has been on display this fall has been more than encouraging. The plan has always been to improve on the previous year's performances and ACC standing."
To begin the new year, Pitt will travel two hours east to University Park, Pa., for the Nittany Lion Challenge Saturday, Jan. 14. The following week, the Panthers will make the short trip to Youngstown State for the YSU Invitational Saturday, Jan. 20, in Youngstown, Ohio. After that, Pitt will head back to Penn State for the PSU National Open, Jan. 27-28.
Next up for Pitt is the Meyo Invitational, held Feb. 3-4 in Notre Dame, Ind., followed by the SPIRE Division 1 Collegiate Invitational, Feb. 10-11, in Geneva, Ohio.
The indoor season will conclude with the ACC Indoor Championships in Notre Dame, Ind. (Feb. 23-25), and the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas (March 10-11).
Pitt will head into the outdoor season with the Yellow Jacket Invitational, to be held March 17-18 in Atlanta, Ga. The Panthers will return home to Pittsburgh the following weekend for the CMU Invitational March 24-25.
For the next week, the team will split between the Pepsi Florida Relays (March 30-April 1), the Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 31-April 1).
The Panthers will compete at seven other meets during the month of April, including the Hurricane Alumni Invitational (April 7-8), the George Mason Spring Invitational (April 8), the Louisville Invitational (April 14-15), the Virginia Challenge (April 21-22), the Penn Relays (April 27-29), the Ashland Open (April 28-29) and the University at Buffalo Invitational (April 29).
