PITTSBURGH—Pitt junior wide receiver Tyler Boyd has been named a candidate for the Biletnikoff Award, annually presented to college football's outstanding receiver of the season, it was announced today by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.
Boyd (Clairton, Pa./Clairton) was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list following an exceptional start to the 2015 season. In two games, he is averaging 10.5 receptions and 113.0 receiving yards. His season totals are 21 catches for 226 yards (10.8 avg.) and a touchdown.
Boyd is coming off a 10-catch, 131-yard effort at Iowa that earned him Atlantic Coast Conference Receiver of the Week honors. "He's a complete receiver," Iowa cornerback Greg Mabin said. "He's big, he's physical, he's fast, he's quick, he runs good routes. He's complete."
Pitt boasts a strong history with the Biletnikoff. Two former Panthers have won the award, Antonio Bryant in 2000 and Larry Fitzgerald in 2003. Pitt is one of only four schools to have two Biletnikoff trophies, joining Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Texas Tech.
Boyd is the nation's active career leader in receptions per game (6.57 avg.). He additionally ranks third among active players in receiving yards per game (95.0 avg.), third in total receiving yards (2,661) and fourth in all-purpose yards per game (140.89 avg.). Boyd is the ACC leader in each of those four categories.
Despite playing in only 28 collegiate games, Boyd is in striking distance of two Pitt career receiving records. With 184 career catches, he is just 18 shy of the all-time mark of 202 held by Devin Street (2010-13).
Boyd presently ranks sixth at Pitt with 2,661 receiving yards. He needs 400 yards to match Bryant, who compiled 3,061 from 1999-2001.
Boyd has compiled 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons at Pitt. He had 1,261 yards as a sophomore and 1,174 as a freshman. Boyd and Fitzgerald are the only players in Pitt history to achieve two 1,000-yard receiving seasons. In ACC annals, Boyd is the only player to achieve 1,000-yard seasons as both a freshman and sophomore.
