PITTSBURGH--Tyler Wilps, a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, has been selected for the Academic All-American second team based on his performance on the Pitt wrestling team as well as his performance in the classroom.
The Academic All-American second team is comprised of Division I athletes from a spectrum of sports, ranging from swimming to golf to wrestling, who also performed very well in their respective field of study. Wilps is one of 12 student athletes selected for this year's team.
Wilps, the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has already earned many honors for being a great student-athlete. He received the Blue-Gold Award at the Pitt Senior Awards Banquet, an award given to one male and one female senior who exhibited athletic prowess as well as academic accomplishment, as well as earning a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-Distric Team in mid-May of this year.
In the classroom, Wilps finished his senior year with a 3.82 GPA, a degree in finance and a minor in chemistry, was named to the University's Dean's List 10 times, and had a perfect 4.0 GPA in his fall semester of 2012.
On the mat, Wilps was a two-time ACC Champion and finished as the national runner-up at 174 pounds his senior year. His overall career record was 87-31.
