PITTSBURGH – Junior Jamel Artis was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week as determined by a vote of a select media panel Monday. It is the second time Artis has received the honor in his career and the fifth time a Panther has been selected for the weekly ACC award.
Artis scored a game-high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal to lead a come-from-behind 79-73 win over visiting Western Carolina last Wednesday. The forward out of Baltimore went 10-of-14 from the field and 8-of-8 from the foul line as the Panthers improved to 10-1 on the season.
Artis registered 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and added five rebounds and two assists in the second half of play as Pitt overcame a seven-point deficit. The Panthers made 14 consecutive free throws down the stretch and outscored Western Carolina, 25-12, over the final 7:01 of game action.
Florida State’s Dwayne Bacon was tabbed as ACC Rookie of the Week.
Pitt returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 30 against long-time rival Syracuse in the ACC opener for both schools. Game time is set for 9:05 p.m. with Dan Shulman and Kara Lawson calling the contest for ESPN2.
