Pitt 76, No. 8 Notre Dame 72
•Pitt improved to 14-8 overall and 4-5 in the ACC with a 76-72 home win over No. 8 Notre Dame at Petersen Events Center. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and also snapped Notre Dame’s five-game win streak. Notre Dame fell to 20-3 overall and 8-2 in the ACC.
•With the win over No. 8 ranked Notre Dame, Pitt improved to 14-3 overall against top-10 nationally ranked teams at the Petersen Events Center. The last time Pitt registered a win over a top-10 ranked team at the Petersen Events Center was on Feb. 2, 2013, a 65-55 win over No. 5 Syracuse. Today’s game marked Pitt’s 17th all-time vs. a top-10 ranked team at the Petersen Events Center.
•Jamie Dixon also improved to 13-3 vs. top-10 nationally ranked teams at the Petersen Events Center and 23-18 all-time vs. top-10 nationally ranked teams.
•Pitt improved to 203-29 all-time at the Petersen Events Center and 82-26 vs. conference opponents in the arena. The Panthers are now 10-2 at home this year.
•Offensively it was an outstanding day for Pitt. Pitt finished the day with season-highs for field goals made (31), field goal percentage (58.5%), assists (24) and scoring in an ACC game (76 points). Pitt finished with 24 assists on 31 field goals made.
•Pitt finished the day with 24 assists on only nine turnovers, a 2.67 assist:turnover ratio.
•Pitt shot 68.2 percent (15-22) in the second half.
•For the fifth consecutive game, Jamel Artis led the Panthers in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Artis finished with fourth career 20-point game and his sixth consecutive double figure scoring day with 20 points on 8-14 shooting and a game and team-high eight rebounds. He has now scored 13 points vs. Florida State, 20 points vs. Georgia Tech, 21 points at Duke, 18 points vs. Louisville, 17 points vs. Virginia Tech and 20 points vs. Notre Dame over each of his last six games. Artis has reached double figure scoring in 13 games on the year and 15 contests in his career. He also surpassed or tied career-highs for minutes played (37), field goals made (eight) and steals (two).
•With his 15 points and a season-high 10 assists, James Robinson notched his first career double-double performance of his career. He has reached double figure scoring for the 11th time this year and 27th time in his career. He scored all 12 points in the second half. It marked his second career 10-plus assist game as his career-high is 11 assists vs. Lehigh on Nov. 20, 2013. Robinson hit the go-ahead driving layup with 12 seconds left to give Pitt a 73-72 lead.
•Cameron Wright scored 14 points on 7-9 shooting with three assists and a career-high tying two blocked shots.. His 14-point performance marked his eighth double figure scoring game of the year and 32nd of his career.
•Michael Young finished the day with 16 points on 7-10 field goal shooting with five rebounds. He has now reached double figure scoring in 22 career games and 17 on the year and has scored in double figures in 12 of his last 14 games played.
•Sophomore guard Josh Newkirk earned his first career start today. He ended up playing 23 minutes and hit 2-3 3-point field goals. It marked Newkirk’s first start in 58 career games played at Pitt.
•Pitt improved to 29-31 all-time in its series against Notre Dame. Pitt also improved to 18-10 vs. Notre Dame in Pittsburgh and 6-2 vs. Notre Dame in the Petersen Events Center. Pitt is also 2-0 vs. Notre Dame in ACC regular season games played. Today’s win snapped a two-game losing streak to the Fighting Irish in Pittsburgh.
