POST-GAME NOTES
North Carolina State at Pitt • Petersen Events Center • March 3, 2014
NC State 74, Pitt 67
*With the 74-67 loss, Pitt fell to 22-8 overall and 10-7 in the ACC, while NC State improved to 18-12 (8-9 ACC). Pitt remains in fifth place in the ACC standings with one game remaining in the regular season, a contest at sixth-placed Clemson on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
*Pitt tied a Jamie Dixon Era low with only 23 rebounds. Previously Pitt grabbed just 23 rebounds against Georgetown on Jan. 13, 2007.
*Pitt grabbed only two offensive rebounds, the fewest offensive rebounds recorded in school history and since the NCAA began charting the statistic in 1986-87.
*Pitt was outrebounded by 12 boards (35-23), its second worst rebounding margin of the year.
*Pitt finished with 10 made 3-pointers on 21 attempts. It was just the third time this season the Panthers knocked down double-digit shots from beyond the arc, following Texas Tech (10) on Nov. 25 and Lehigh (11) on Nov. 20.
*The Panthers recorded 18 assists on 21 made field goals -- meaning 86 percent of Pitt’s baskets stemmed from an assist. It was the most team assists for Pitt since the Clemson game at the Petersen Events Center on Jan. 21 when the Panthers tallied 24 assists on 27 made field goals.
*Josh Newkirk tied a school-record for most consecutive 3-point field goals made with seven over the last two games (5-5 tonight and 2-2 at Notre Dame on Saturday). He still has a chance to set the record on Saturday against Clemson. He tied the record of 7 held two times by Sean Miller at Seton Hall-St. John’s, Feb. 12, 1991-Feb. 14, 1991 and vs. St. Francis, Pa., Dec. 2, 1987-Chicago State, Dec. 7, 1987.
*Freshman guard Josh Newkirk had the best night of his young career, contributing a career-high 20 points behind a perfect 5-5 mark from beyond the arc. His 3-point shooting mark stands as a new career best for him, and it was the eighth time in program history that a Panther went perfect from behind the arc when attempting at least five triples. His 34 minutes played and 7-8 field goal shooting were both career-highs. It was the first time Newkirk led Pitt in scoring this year.
*In his final regular season game at the Petersen Events Center, senior Lamar Patterson poured in 17 points with six assists. It marked Patterson’s 28th double figure scoring game of the season and 65th of his career.
*Senior Talib Zanna contributed 11 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Those nine rebounds propelled him to 13th on the all time rebounding list in program history with 748, surpassing Chuck Hursh.
*NC State’s T.J. Warren set Petersen Events Center records for scoring (41 points) and field goals made (16). Warren’s 41 points are tied for the eighth most points that an opponent has scored against the Panthers in program history. The 16 field goals made ranked tied for the second most field goals made against Pitt by an opposing player. He became just the sixth opposing player in Petersen Events Center to score more than 30 points against Pitt.
*The Panthers caught fire from downtown early, converting on six of their 11 3-point attempts in the first half. It was their best mark from behind the arc in the first half of a game in ACC play and the second best such mark in the season (they were 7-14 beyond the arc in the first half against Lehigh on Nov. 20, 2013).
*At halftime Pitt honored its 333 student-athletes who achieved scholar-athlete status in the previous two semesters, including 10 members of the men’s basketball team: Lamar Patterson, Jamel Artis, Joshua Ko, Mike Lecak, Josh Newkirk, Aron Nwankwo, James Robinson, Joseph Uchebo, Cameron Wright and Michael Young.
*Pitt played its final regular season home game. Pitt finished the 2013-14 season with 198,078 total fans for an 11,004 average over 18 home games. The 11,004 average ranks third in school history for home attendance average trailing No. 1: 11,611 in 2006-07 and 11,194 in 2008-09.
*Pitt finished with a 13-5 home record and 4-5 home record in ACC games this year.
