Virginia Tech at No. 25/22 Pitt • Petersen Events Center • February 8, 2014

•Pitt improved to 20-4 on the season and 8-3 overall in the Atlantic Coast Conference with today’s 62-57 double-overtime victory against Virginia Tech, marking the program’s 13th consecutive 20-win season.
•Pitt played its first back-to-back overtime games for the first time since the 1997-98 season. Prior to today’s game, Pitt’s previous overtime victory came on Feb. 5 when the Panthers defeated Miami (FL), 59-55. Today’s game marked the third instance in program history that the Panthers have played consecutive overtime contests. The previous back-to-back overtime contests occurred on Jan. 17-22, 1998 against Rutgers (W, 86-85) and St. John’s (2OT; L, 83-90) and on Feb. 11-18, 1978 against Maryland (Civic Arena) (W, 89-86) and Penn State (L, 75-68).
•The last time Pitt played at least two overtime periods was on Feb. 12, 2010 vs. West Virginia (3OT) in a 98-95 Panthers victory at the Petersen Events Center.
•Pitt has played nine overtime games at the Petersen Events Center and is now 6-3 in all-time in overtime games at PEC.
•Cameron Wright led the Panthers in scoring with 18 points on 5-for-13 shooting in today’s contest—the second highest point total in his career—and he also registered career high in 3-point field goal attempts (six) and tied his career best in triples made (two). The junior guard also had six rebounds and three assists to go along with a 6-7 performance at the free-throw line. It was his 14th career double figure scoring game. Wright forced a jump ball with 2.7 seconds left in the game to turn the possession arrow in Pitt’s favor after Virginia Tech held a running clock with the presumed final play of regulation.
• James Robinson tied his career high of 16 points against the Hokies, shooting 4-of-7 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 5-for-7 at the charity stripe. Robinson’s three 3-pointers made were a career best and his four attempts from 3-point range tied an individual high. He also tied a career-high with four steals. With the Panthers trailing 48-44 with 33.4 seconds left in regulation, Robinson nailed a corner 3-point shot while drawing a foul, successfully completing the four-point play to tie the game. Robinson also hit a pair of free throws with 1:51 left in the first overtime period to tie his personal best in scoring.
•Josh Newkirk registered 11 points this afternoon to tie his career high in scoring, originally set on Nov. 8, 2013 vs. Savannah State. Newkirk also spent a career-high 27 minutes on the floor.
•Through 12 seasons at the Petersen Events Center, Pitt has now compiled a 193-24 all-time record (.889 winning percentage) and a 78-21 showing in conference play (.788 winning percentage). The Panthers have also won 14 of their last 16 games at home, including a 12-2 slate this season.
•Jamie Dixon now owns a 19-2 record vs. previous ACC teams and a 35-13 overall record vs. current members of the ACC (including Syracuse and Notre Dame).
•The Panthers improved to 14-1 when shooting at least 70 percent from the free-throw line (71.4%) and 13-1 when limiting opponents to less than 40 percent from the field (32.1%) this season.
•Pitt scored 21 points off a season high 20 turnovers. The previous best in forced turnovers for the Panthers was 18 vs. Howard on Nov. 17.
•The double-overtime conference match-up between Pitt and Virginia Tech featured 10 lead changes and eight ties.
•Lamar Patterson had five assists against Virginia Tech, marking the 11th time this season that the senior forward has notched at least five assists in a game this season. Patterson’s first points in the game came with 1:28 left in the first overtime period—a pair of free throws made that gave Pitt a 52-50 lead. He also opened the scoring in the second overtime period with a jumper to give Pitt a 54-52 lead with 4:19 left.
•Pitt hosted Virginia Tech for the first time since Jan. 6, 2004 (W, 74-61). Pitt is now 6-3 in the all-time series.
