Pitt vs. Maryland • Petersen Events Center • January 6, 2014
Pitt 79, Maryland 59
•Pitt improves to 14-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 79-59 win over Maryland. The game was the first-ever ACC home contest for the Panthers.
•Jamie Dixon improved to a combined 13-0 record vs. previous ACC teams
•The victory was Pitt’s 12th straight at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers own a 190-22 record at the PEC and have won 96 of their last 108 home contests. Pitt is now 10-0 at home this year.
•The contest marked the eighth meeting between the two programs with Pitt improving to a 3-5 record versus Maryland. The matchup was the first since 2010 (at MSG, Pitt 79, Maryland 70) and the first-ever at the Petersen Events Center.
•The Panthers held the Terrapins to their second-lowest point total of the season (lowest, 56). Maryland was averaging 74.5 points prior to the game. Maryland leading scorer Dez Wells - averaging a team-best 15.0 points prior to the contest - finished with five points, while second leading scorer Jake Layman (13.7 ppg) had three points.
•The final score reflected Pitt’s 12th double-digit victory this season and the sixth victory by 20-or-more points on the year.
•Senior Lamar Patterson scored a game-high 19 points, marking the ninth this season he paced or co-paced the Panthers in scoring in a single game. Patterson has recorded double figures in 14 of Pitt’s 15 games this season, including the past 13-straight.
•Redshirt sophomore Durand Johnson tallied a career-high 17 points. He topped his previous best of 15 versus Lehigh on Nov. 20, 2013. He also reached a career-best in field goals made (six).
•Patterson and Johnson combined to shoot 14-of-20 from the field (.700). Patterson was 8-of-12 from the field, while Johnson connected on 6-of-8 shots. They were a combined 4-of-6 (.667) from 3-point range.
•Redshirt senior Talib Zanna had his 11th double-digit scoring contest and third-straight with 13 points. He added nine rebounds, his third-straight game with nine boards.
•Sophomore James Robinson had seven assists, the most for the point guard since Duquesne on Nov. 30 – a span of eight games.
•As a team, Pitt shot 52.7 percent from the field (29-of-55) – the fifth 50 percent-plus performance of the season for the Panthers.
•The Panthers connected on a season-best 60 percent of their 3-point opportunities (6-of-10).
•Pitt got 31 points from its bench, the third-highest bench total of the season for the Panthers.
