
No. 20/21 Notre Dame Defeats Pitt Swimming and Diving

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams suffered their first conference losses of the season as both teams were defeated by the nationally-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
The Fighting Irish women’s team defeated Pitt 188-112, while the ND men topped the Panthers 176-124. Both Pitt men and women are now 2-2 overall on the season and 1-1 in Big East Competition.
Kelsey Herbst had a standout meet for the women, winning both the 500 Free and the 1,000 Free. She touched the wall in 4:57.99 in the 500, while she led Pitt to a 1-2-3 finish in 1,000 in a time of 10:13.72. Lauren Matevish and Kaleigh Ritter placed second and third in that event.
Dani des Tombe set a season best during a second place finish in the 200 Free with a time of 1:53.27. Veronica Lee had a lifetime best in the 200 Fly as she finished second in 2:03.28, and then won the 200 Breast for the fourth-consecutive meet in a time of 2:18.08.
Joanna Budzis was the final Individual winner for the Pitt women as she won the 200IM in a time of 2:07.44.
On the men’s side, three different swimmers set lifetime best, while senior Adam Maczewski swam to a season-best time in the 100 Backstroke. Maczewski posted a time of 49.02 en route to keeping his undefeated record intact. He also won the 200 Backstroke in a time of 1:49.97.
For the second straight meet, Martin Vogel had a lifetime best in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:50.08 as he won that event. His third place finish in the 500 Free was also a lifetime best (4:39.50), while David Sweeney Jr. was second in that event with a lifetime best of 4:36.55.
Kourosh Ahani remained undefeated in the 100 Fly with a time of 49.29, while Mack Rice won the 200IM in a lifetime best of 1:52.24.
After four straight weeks of dual meets, the Panthers host the Pitt Invitational next weekend at Trees Pool. Competition begins on Friday, Nov. 16.
