Pittsburgh- The University of Pittsburgh women’s track and field team will look to build off its strong showing last weekend at the Penn State Relays when it returns to State College, Pa. for the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Pitt will be joined at the meet by Albany, Cornell, Maryland, host Penn State and West Virginia in the Panthers’ first scored meet of the season
“We head back to a great facility at Penn State this weekend and there will be very good competition at this meet,” head coach Alonzo Webb said. “We’re looking forward to this weekend and I know there will be some great results coming out of the meet.”
The Panthers will look to continue the success they’ve had so far in their first two meets of the season where several members of the team have posted Big East qualifying times.
Sophomore Ashley Corum recorded two top-three finishes last weekend at the Penn State Relays. She claimed first place in the long jump with a leap of 5.61M and finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 11.79M.
The 4x400M relay team composed of Xauddina Whittington, Jonnique Lawrence, Arielle Fonrose and Taylor Ellis-Watson also stood out, finishing third with a time of 3:43.73. That time currently has them sitting among the top five marks in the nation.
Lawrence posted the second best time in the 200M in the Big East by finishing second (24.69) while Fonrose ran the third fastest time in the conference (25.10). They trail only teammate Cambrya Jones for the top 200M time in the Big East this season.
