PITTSBURGH - The Pitt men's soccer team is home for the first time in the 2011 season as it hosts the Pitt/Nike Classic this weekend at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex. The Panthers entertain Duquesne, Air Force and Bowling Green in the two-day event which begins on Friday, Sept. 9.
Pitt opens its home season at 7:30 p.m. against Air Force while Duquesne and Bowling Green meet in the earlier contest at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Air Force/Duquesne game commences at 11 a.m. with Pitt playing Bowling Green at 2:30 p.m.
Pitt is coming off a 1-0-1 showing at the Duquesne Invitational last weekend. The Panthers posted a 1-0 win over Stony Brook in the first game and recorded a 1-1 double overtime tie against Valparaiso on Sunday.
Friday's Pitt-Air Force matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs in school history. The Falcons are 1-1-0 on the season and enter the tournament having dropped a 2-0 decision to Davidson on Sept. 2.
Pitt and Bowling Green are meeting for the third time in program history with each team having won in the all-time series (Pitt victory in 2002, BGSU in 2006). The Falcons are 2-1 in 2011 and enter the Pitt/Nike Invitational having lost to Cleveland State (2-1) in their last outing.
The Panthers are paced in scoring by sophomore Nico Wrobel, who has tallied all three Pitt goals this season. Two of the three strikes have come off penalty kicks.
Wrobel, along with freshman goalkeeper Lee Johnston and sophomore Robert Illedare were named to the Duquesne Invitational All-Tournament team. Johnston, who got his first two career starts last weekend, played 200 minutes in goal for the Panthers and allowed just one goal and finished with eight saves. He was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Johnston is currently ranked third among league leaders in save percentage (.900) and fourth in goals against average (.433).
