Four Pitt Wrestlers Qualify for Fila Junior Trials

Cleveland, Ohio- This past weekend, several members of the Pitt wrestling team competed at the USA Fila Junior Nationals and US Open. Four Panther wrestlers qualified for the Fila Junior Trials on May 19th-20th.
Freshman Tyler Wilps (79 KG, 174 lbs) placed second with a 4-1 record in the competition. Highlighting Wilps' run was his battle in the first two rounds after dropping the first period. Redshirt freshman PJ Tasser also placed in the weight class, finishing in fifth with a 4-2 record after defeating Jordan Thomas of Michigan. Tasser recorded his fastest pin at 1:20.
Freshman Max Thomusseit (84 KG, 185 lbs) finished second with a 4-1 record. Thomusseit's only loss came in the final with a 2-1, 1-2, 1-1 decision to Lee Munster of Northwestern. Thomusseit did not lose a period while advancing to the finals.
Wilps, Tasser and Thomusseit qualified for the Fila Junior Trials with top-6 finishes.
Freshman Shelton Mack (60 KG, 132.25 lbs) also qualified for the Fila Junior Trials with a fourth place finish and a 6-2 record on the day. Mack notched two pins en route to the fourth place showing with two pins in less than one minute, including his fastest at 0:19.
In the 63 KG (138.75 lbs), freshman Erik Galloway earned seventh after defeating Garret Frey of Princeton by way of fall at 0:33.
Redshirt senior Ryan Tomei (120 Kg, 264.5 lbs) finished in eighth place with a 2-2 record at the tournament.
