Philadelphia, Pa. - The Pitt wrestling team concluded its stellar season on Friday after the remaining six qualifiers were eliminated at the 2011 NCAA Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia.
The Panthers combined for eight wins at the tournament, totaling 15.5 points.
Junior Zac Thomusseit (197) fell one match short of garnering All-America honors. Thomusseit won his opening two matches before falling to No. 2-seeded Clayton Foster of Oklahoma State and No. 9-seeded Sonny Yohn of Virginia Tech.
Earlier in the day, sophomore Anthony Zanetta (125) and redshirt junior Tyler Nauman (141) each won their opening matches in the consolation bracket.
Zanetta recorded a 5-3 decision over Steve Bonanno of Hofstra before succumbing to Sean Boyle of Michigan.
Nauman advanced with a shutout win over Hicks Manson of Cornell, 3-0. The Middletown, Pa., native used an escape and a takedown. In a match decided in the final seconds, Nauman was ousted by Stephen Dutton of Lehigh, 7-6.
Redshirt sophomore Donnie Tasser (157), freshman Max Thomusseit (184) and redshirt senior Ryan Tomei (285) all dropped their only match of the day.
Tomei finishes his career at Pitt with a 109-34 record. His 40 career falls are second only to Pat Santoro's record (43).
The Panthers finished the season with a perfect 6-0 record in conference action to claim back-to-back EWL dual season titles. The team also earned its first ever EWL Conference Championship earlier this month in Bloomsburg, Pa.
