Pitt Track and Field To Compete at the Akron Invitational

PITTSBURGH- Resuming action this weekend, the Panthers track and field teams travel to Akron, Ohio to compete in the Akron Invitational. The two day event begins on Friday, Feb. 11 and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Last weekend, the men's team captured the 4x400 relay event while adding six other top-10 finishes at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, N.Y. The women's track and field team notched 10 top-10 finishes with five individuals setting career bests.
Several athletes set career bests at the meet, including sophomores Tashaun Hill and Wesley Washington, juniors Dan Kwiatkowski and Miya Johnson, and senior Brianna Broyles. Hill finished sixth in the 60M hurdles championships with a sprint of 8.00 while Kwiatkowski earned a ninth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 16.93m. Washington competed in the 1,000M run championship event, racing to an all-time best mark of 2:31.96.
For the women, Johnson earned a third place finish in the 500M dash, crossing the finish line at 1:15.94. In the 60M hurdle championships, Broyles set her career best with a mark of 8.32.
The Panthers hope to continue their success from last year's performances at the Akron Invitational. In the 2010 competition, Hill finished third in the finals of the 60M hurdles, earning an IC4A standard of 8.06. Additionally, junior Greg Kareis won the 800M run with an IC4A standard of 1:52.21
In the 60M hurdles, Broyles earned a spot in the finals where she finished sixth, falling under the ECAC qualifying standard of 8.84. Senior, Wunmi Fapohunda qualified for the ECACs with a leap of 5.72 in the long jump. She finished fourth overall in the event.
Also for the women, senior Alexis Wilder posted a top-five finish, as she hurled the discus 39.11M. In the same event, junior Robin Gilmore sailed the discus 37.88M for seventh place.
Following the Akron Invitational, the Panthers will travel back to Akron, Ohio for the Big East Indoor Championships on Feb. 19-20.
