MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Pitt men’s soccer team collected its first loss of the season when it fell to James Madison 2-0 Friday night at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match marked the first game of the Big East Partner Weekend. Pitt falls to 4-1-0 on the year, while James Madison improves to 5-0-0.
The loss broke a four-game winning streak for the Panthers. The 4-1-0 start gives the Panthers their best record to begin a season since 2002, when they remained undefeated for the first five games of the season.
The Dukes registered their first goal on the night in the fifth minute of play when Markus Bjorkheim collected a pass, and shot the ball into the upper right corner of the net. Bjorkheim also tallied the final goal for JMU in the 31st minute after he took a direct kick from the left of the box.
The Panthers had an 11-4 advantage over the Dukes in corner kicks, but were outshot 16-11.
Freshman Alex Grayson led the Panthers in shots with 3, while junior Terry Akpua led the team in shots on goal with 2.
Pitt has only allowed three goals in five games.
Pitt will return to action in the Big East Partner Weekend on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. when they take on Cal State Fullerton.
