The 18th-ranked Pitt wrestling team won its 14th match of the season with a 53-0 domination of Millersville Saturday evening, tying the Panthers for the most dual wins in a season in school history. Pitt improves to 14-1-1 on the season and is a perfect 3-0 in EWL action.
The Panthers shut out the Mauraders and recorded six pins on the day, starting at 125 with freshman Anthony Zanetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), who defeated Matthew Devestine of Millersville by fall in 2:11.
At 133 and 141, Pitt’s Jimmy Conroy and Tyler Nauman picked up wins by forfeit. Pitt’s Eric Albright (York, Pa./Red Lion Area/Virginia) followed that up at 149 with a pin in 1:32 over John Lester.
Donnie Tasser (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) picked up an 8-7 decision over Jarrett Hostetter at 157, and Adam Counterman (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) at 165 earned a tech fall in 6:04 over Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush of Millersville. Pitt’s final decision of the day came in a 2-0 win by Dave Sullivan (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) at 174 over Shane Smith.
The strength of the Panthers’ lineup this season has been the final three weight classes and they did not disappoint against Millersville as each recorded a fall.
At 184, Zac Thomusseit (St. Paris, Ohio/St. Paris Graham) pinned Jason Foor in 4:39. Sophomore Matt Wilps (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) earned a fall over Josh Marquard at 197 in just 1:45 and junior Ryan Tomei (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) recorded a pin (1:20) over Charles Godfrey to conclude the match.
The Panthers will return to action Saturday, Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. match at West Virginia for an Eastern Wrestling League matchup.
